In the ever changing and compliance focused world of research administration, one of the most important things you can do is to stay informed with things that are going on in the research administration community.
Within Georgia Tech:
- DC Buzz – Updates from Washington: Robert Knotts, Executive Director – Federal Relations, sends out an update email every few weeks regarding congressional updates, agency updates, etc. https://gov.gatech.edu/federal-relations
- Research Bulletin: Issued by the Office of the Chief Research Operations Officer (CROO), this is a monthly email that covers news that is very specific to Georgia Tech research.
- Georgia Tech “Live” Outreach:
- Latest Buzz with Grants & Contracts (G&C) Accounting: a monthly virtual session focused on post award topics such as invoicing, reporting, compliance, effort reporting, best practices, and grants systems. https://grants.gatech.edu/latest-buzz-gc-accounting
- Research Administration Buzz (RAB): a quarterly in-person/virtual session focused on all topics (pre and post award) relevant to research administration.
Outside of Georgia Tech:
This website provides more information on outside research focused organizations and external certifications. https://osp.gatech.edu/external-certifications-and-professional-education. There are several societies and groups that are focused on research administration.
- Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) - an association of research universities, affiliated medical centers, and independent research institutes. https://www.cogr.edu/
- National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) – a professional society dedicated to advancing the profession of research administration. https://www.ncura.edu/
- Society of Research Administrators International (SRAI) – a global research management society. https://www.srainternational.org/home
- Georgia Research Administrators NeTwork (GRANT) – an organization which offers an annual conference hosted by Georgia universities. You can sign up through LinkedIn by clicking on the link provided on the OSP website referenced above.
- National Contract Management Association (NCMA) – an association for contracting officers or those dealing with contracts: https://www.ncmahq.org/
- National Grants Management Association (NGMA) – an association providing lifecycle grants management training, professional certification, continuing professional education, tools and resources, and a forum for networking with grants industry professionals https://www.ngma.org/
- Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP): an organization whose goal is to streamline the administration of federally sponsored research and foster collaboration to enhance the national research enterprise. http://www.thefdp.org/
It is also critical to stay informed regarding news from specific sponsors that you are working with or are looking to work with in the future. Most sponsors will have very informative and helpful websites that provide information on policies, procedures, upcoming conferences, and any news relevant to PIs and administrators.
